Michael Otto is a passionate music and art lover. He supports numerous projects and institutions in this area. His hometown of Hamburg benefits from this above all.
As his patronage for the youth music project The Young ClassX has shown, Michael Otto considers the music training of children and youth to be very important. That is why he has repeatedly supported the state youth music school in Hamburg. It is the largest music school in Europe and gives music training to 23,500 children and youth. Michael Otto many times donated millions for both the rebuilding of the school in 1999 and the new concert hall in 2011.
Michael Otto and his wife Christl donated multiple millions to support the construction of the iconic building designed by the Swiss architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron.
Since the 1980s, Friends of the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg has been supporting students in the implementation of their first major works. Since 2009, they have been supporting Master’s students with four annual scholarships of EUR 5,000 each. Michael Otto initiated the Friends in 1986, was long its chair and has now moved into the background a little as its deputy chair for time reasons.
In 1989, the interior courtyard of the Museum of Hamburg History was covered by a glass roof. It was designed by the architectural firm Gerkan, Marg and Partner, with the reconstruction funded by Michael Otto.
Michael Otto also supports many cultural projects at other Hamburg museums, theaters and opera houses.
